Great Pretenders is a Canadian brand of costumes and accessories for children, founded in Toronto. Capes, skirts and wings, wands, headbands and little pieces of jewellery: everything is designed for imaginative play, for girls and boys alike. Several of its capes go over everyday clothes, turning an ordinary afternoon into a make-believe adventure.

At Rue des Grands Carmes 11 you'll find the brand's capes: the rainbow unicorn cape in faux fur, the long-pile Swampy monster cape and, made in Canada, the gold star cape, The 5th Avenue and Superstar sequin capes and the reversible superheroine cape. For a full costume: the knight set (tunic, cape and crown), the police officer costume with accessories, the Royal Fairy Princess and Gracious Gold fairy sets (skirt, wings and wand), the Flutter butterfly set, the Mermaid Glimmer mermaid skirt with its tiara headband, and the Celestial Dragon Jewel dragon wings. How do Great Pretenders sizes work?

Costumes, capes, skirts and wings come in age ranges. The brand uses US sizes (US 2-3T, US 4-6, US 5-6…), which we show directly as ages on our product pages: from 2-3 years to 7-8 years, mostly 4-6 years. Three designs come in two sizes: the unicorn cape (2-3 and 4-6 years), the police officer costume (3-4 and 5-6 years) and the knight set (5-6 and 7-8 years). The wands, the dagger, sword and shield, headbands, bags, diaries, jewellery and face crystals are one size.

Which Great Pretenders items are chosen at random?

Some small accessories are sold individually and the design is picked at random, depending on what comes in, with no choice possible: the mermaid wand and the Deluxe star wand (from 3 designs), the dagger and the sword (from 2 designs), the Furry Friends Squishy unicorn diary (2 designs), the True Heart bag (purple or pink), the Glitterally Amazing stress ball, the Fancy Feline spinner ring (from 8 designs) and the Taylor's Bestie bracelet, sold without its display stand. Everything else you choose yourself: the four headbands, the three face crystal designs (sold by the sheet), the wizard wand and the Fanciful unicorn wand, the shield, the Skyline Sparkle Party bag and the Sisters Forever diary.

How do you care for Great Pretenders capes and skirts?

The Swampy monster cape is machine washable (follow the temperature on the label), as are the tutu skirt from the Gracious Gold set and the Mermaid Glimmer mermaid skirt; for these two sets only the skirt goes in the machine, while the wings, wand and headband should be dusted gently. For the unicorn cape, the star cape and the sequin capes, follow the care label and keep them away from heat sources; for the reversible cape, we recommend hand washing or spot cleaning, without bleach, and drip drying on a hanger, without heat. Store sequin capes flat or hanging so the sequins don't bend, wings flat and tutus without squashing them, so they keep their volume.
